Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning for the Award of Academic Qualifications (APEL.Q) is a pathway that enables experienced individuals to have their prior experiential learning assessed towards the award of an academic qualification. It recognises that substantial learning can be developed through professional practice, leadership, projects, entrepreneurship, workplace innovation, training and other real-world experiences.

At APU, APEL.Q focuses not simply on the number of years an individual has worked, but on the knowledge, competencies, skills and capabilities gained through experience. Through a structured assessment process, candidates demonstrate their learning against the requirements and learning outcomes of the intended academic qualification, providing an opportunity for relevant experiential learning to be formally recognised.

Step 2: APPLY

Submit your APEL Q Application

Send to your counsellor the required supporting documents for preliminary assessment. Complete your APEL.Q application through the MQA Portal, submit the APU Registration Form, and proceed with the payment of the applicable Enrolment and Self-Assessment Fee.

Step 3: ASSESS

Progress Through the Four-Stage APEL.Q Assessment

Portfolio 20%
A portfolio that brings together evidence of what you have learned, achieved and developed through your prior experiences.

Field and Validation Visit (FVV) 20%
Evaluate the learner’s knowledge, skills and competencies through an appropriate assessment conducted at the workplace or a suitable assessment location.

Challenge Test 30%
Candidates may be assessed through written examinations, practical or performance-based tasks, and oral assessments, as applicable to the programme.

Capstone Course 30%
The Capstone Course brings together the programme’s key learning outcomes, giving candidates the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and overall mastery. An oral examination forms part of the assessment.
